In fact, according to Visit Britain 40.9 million people visited the UK in 2019 (the last figures before the pandemic broke, restricting numbers). According to The Office for National Statistics 5.9 million visitors landed on the UK’s shores in the first four months of 2022. And, now that no further lockdowns are planned here, that number looks like it’s just the start of the UK regaining its tourist economy. Coming to see and stay with your friend in the UK means you’ll get an inside look at what it’s like to be British – warts and all. In other words, it’ll be the ‘real Britain’ you see rather than the whitewashed tourist version. That means yes, that you may find yourself eating fish and chips just one too many times or that the TV really does seem to be constantly on in the background, but soak it all up – it’s our culture. And no, public transport probably isn’t as good as where you come from (trains are regularly cancelled and buses don’t always arrive on time), but reluctantly having to accept this is another part of being British.

The amazing stage shows and theatre

Of course, there is always another side to British culture. And that is, going to the theatre. Your British friend will be able to find out for you months in advance which shows will be on when you’re visiting and will already have booked tickets, making sure you don’t miss out on what really can be some spectacular stage shows here in the UK. Whether it’s Hamilton in London’s West End, The Book of Mormon at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal or Riverdance at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin, there’s always plenty to take in.

Stunning scenery and landscapes

From the majestic Cuillin mountains in Scotland and rounded peaks of the Lake District to the rolling hills of the Peak District and the beautiful green countryside of Wales, the UK has a lot to offer in terms of scenery and landscape. It’s impossible to take it all in if you’re only here for a week or even two. But, as a native of these shores your friend will be able to narrow down what it is you’d appreciate seeing most and then working out how to get there so that you get to maximise your time while there.

The UK’s culinary heritage

The same prioritising process goes for eating in the UK. There are many Michelin-starred restaurants scattered around these nations. But there are also amazing eateries that didn’t quite make the French guide but are still great to go to – not to mention more affordable. And, if your friend is a foodie, then no doubt they already have a list of them to take you to. In other words, happily there will be no over-priced and under-seasoned tourist fayre for you.
